Hurricane Sally — the film, 4:14. THE LONG ROAD · 001, the first long-form film in the Vault series.
September 2020 — The Gulf Coast, after Hurricane Sally
September 2020. Hurricane Sally had just torn through the Gulf Coast, and I was riding through what she left behind with everything I owned on a bicycle — and a cheap green poncho. That poncho was my rain gear, my shelter plan, and my strategy. "If you don't hear from me in a couple days, call the Coast Guard." I said it as a joke. Mostly.
What the numbers don't tell you is what happened next — people. A man named Wesley stopped and prayed over me in a Planet Fitness parking lot. Rachel, working the bar I stumbled into that night, bought me dinner and beers. Neill drove me to Shepard State Park in Gautier, and when the storm tore my tent apart overnight, he came back the next morning with another one — a casino giveaway tent built for a toddler. I'm 6'4", 220. Freda, who worked at the park, comped my stay and surprised me with breakfast. In Theodore, a bartender named Debbie sang karaoke while I dried out, and a regular in that bar pressed a small glowing cross into my hand. I carried it for a year and a half.
Then came the borrowed Airstream that lasted one night, a board off a semi through a windshield, a park that was closed for COVID but let me in anyway, 77 miles ridden into the wind in the dark — and a hotel room in Florida where I got on my knees at 11 o'clock at night and asked what I was supposed to do. I was lost. He sent me back on a new journey.
Here's what that week taught me, and it has never stopped being true: nobody's coming to save you — and somebody always shows up. A plate. A prayer. A ride. A tent two sizes too small.
That is why this film opens a new shelf in the Vault. The short scenes tell the story in minutes; THE LONG ROAD tells it in films — long-form, numbered, no shortcuts. This is entry 001. The whole series lives in one place: THE LONG ROAD playlist on YouTube.
The deepest parts of that week stay in the book. OUTGROW YESTERDAY, coming soon.
So now you: who showed up for you when nobody was supposed to? Name them — even if it's just to yourself. That's not sentiment. That's the receipt.
